Before you ask; yes, I do come with pre-made sandwiches and cooking skills. I'm Joycelin, mostly known as Jae, and I'm about the nerdiest, quirkiest, and quietest black chick you will ever meet. I go back to N64 days as far as gaming. Zelda: Ocarina of Time is what got me into hardcore gaming and the rest are just years blistered thumbs and late nights with a controller in hand.

That’s cool you guys discussed my blog post. I’d like to point out a couple things you said.

The whole online thing, I have to admit, I’ve never experienced it as due to living in Kuwait and no support being offered for it in my country back in 2000/20001.

As for the games list, I said right there that I’m just going to name games laying around me, in a random selection type of way. The reason I did that was to show that if you took random games from the Dreamcast, almost every time you would get 60% or more of them being arcade ports. And even some of the games he mention perfectly exemplifies my point, soul caliber – arcade port, nfl/nba – just rehashes of the same old sports games and I believe they’re from arcades as well, because I remember a sega arcade cab with a basketball game int it, sonic adventure - 3d remake of a current franchise. The point is that Sega was so lazy just to port everything from Arcade to dreamcast.

As for the online simplicity thing you mentioned, you should research about the XBAND, because that is the real precurrsor to xbox live. It had everything XBOX live had. And also, PCs with their lobby systems were much simplier and easier to get online with and find games than the dreamcast, and that was back in 1998 when they had that online handling client called HEAT or whatever. I remember it do this day I used to sign on and play some games.

I love my dreamcast dewds, but stop letting nostalgia blind you. Anyone can have the same feelings and emotions when they get a new console and not just the Dreamcast. Anyone can argue that the PS2, SNES, or Game Boy was ahead of it’s time using the same claims you used in the podcast. Free yourself of nostalgia!

I see what you’re saying and I can respect that. I actually can see a couple of faults in my argument against you. Despite that, I don’t believe it’s pure nostalgia that makes me feel that way toward the Dreamcast. I just believe that in the running of “System Ahead Of It’s Time”, Dreamcast would win hands down. It’s a lot that I can admit Dreamcast didn’t do first but their ambition with the way they re-did it was more than most. In that age of consoles (not including PC), not many people were really trying to do things differently but, Sega did try that one time. We can all admit at some point you realized it was a half-assed try but it was still trying, which is more than you can say for most.
I also think our definition of “ahead of it’s time” may vary. When you mentioned the PS2 and GameBoy, I had to stop and think for a moment. For me, that term means something that is created and has so many possibilities it makes things coming out the same year seem outdated. Despite it’s advantages, no one realizes the potential or even gives it much time, if any, to find them. Due to this, the thing will eventually cease to exist. Though it’s hard to find a GameBoy or PS2 (original or slim) I don’t think they really fall into that category. Also, I would like to add that we weren’t bashing your article. Now that I listen, it sounded that way but we weren’t at all attacking you or anything like that.

The Dreamcast was not the norm for its time.  Even “experts” and I use that term loosely, remarked that the Dreamcast did not do as well because of the time that it was released.  I find your argument valid, but no enough to change my opinion.  And this is what makes discussions so great is that we can both walk away feeling right with no feelings hurt.  Good article and nice points in it.  Thanks for the retort.

Finding Nemo was a great movie!

Yeah man of course we can discuss the subject without it turning into a kindergarten playground lol. The system didn’t do so well because honestly Sega was lazy and didn’t really care about the console. Only the dedicated game makers put their hearts into such awesome games like sonic adventures, power stone1/2, and shenmue, but Sega could care less and wanted to focus more on arcades and arcade systems where they were making a lot more money, and also they wanted to shift focus to software. When the PS2 hit it completely overshadowed the Dreamcast and almost instantly the mass public dropped it for Sony’s system which was technologically superior.
