VGAs 2011 Recap

So the VGAs are over…

That’s one less thing on the list of painful holiday experiences.

We all know of the yearly occurrences’ reputation that, without fail, gets weirder with each passing year. With the announcements and premieres, relevant to our interest however, we can overlook it for a moment and try to enjoy it.

So, without further ado, let’s get to what was important.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was crowned Best Shooter while Zelda was inducted into the Gaming Hall of Fame. At the end of the day though, GOTY is what we all care about. The other stuff is just a filler to make the show last for 2 hours. As a surprise to everyone, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim won. It’s not a bad game; but, considering the significant amount of glitches it’s known to have, Batman: Arkham City was expected for the title.

For the rest of the categories and winners, check out Spike’s website.

The premieres took up the rest of the show, starting with:

The Last of Us

Oddly, the only title worth a lot of attention.

This title has had a thick cloud of mystery covering it since its initial reveal earlier this week. You can read our first impressions here and here.

Many gamers were at a crossroads with the game’s content. Is it zombies or some other post-apocalyptic panic overtaking the world?

Now after seeing the trailer, not much of the mystery has been solved. Though it’s visually stunning the actual plot, aside from being the last of something in the midst of the end of days, not much else is given.

You can find out more concerning Naughty Dog’s PS3 exclusive here.

Mass Effect 3

Another trailer showing Earth in its time of need was shown. Bioware just keeps baiting us all with Commander Shepard, preparing for the last installment of the trilogy next year.

Command & Conquer: Generals 2

This was a surprise to a lot of people. When I heard Bioware would be showing a new franchise, I was overjoyed and excited…then I saw this. Not a big fan so I guess that is why. The only notable thing anyone can say is that it runs of the Frostbite 2 engine, mostly known for its use in Battlefield 3.

Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

The first game was an underdog in a sea of bigger titles but, from what I played, it was a solid title. The trailer for the sequel is enough to get me excited for it. I may just have to go back and play through the first.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Is it just me playing too much Mass Effect or did he look like he was fighting a Reaper? Other than that, there was nothing worth mentioning about it.

Fortnight

It looked like a cartoony version of Left 4 Dead. The colors were bright and plentiful and there wasn’t blood everywhere. It’s new for Epic and the Gears franchise but, I’ll have to see more before I give a good opinion.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron

The Tranfromers movies have tainted my mind and the art style that differs from previous Transformer games is distracting. None of these are bad things, simply things that are prominent. I will give it a chance though considering there is no sign of Meghan Fox’s horrible acting and seductively starring at the camera to cover that fact up.

Diablo III

Much like Elder Scrolls, I never got into Diablo but the opening cinematic that was shown makes me question why I never have. It looked amazing and keeps up the classic Action/Roleplaying genre. If you are into these sort of games, I suggest you check it out.

Metal Gear Rising

I’m concerned with Kojima’s introduction to the trailer. Was he tongue tied because of his horrible English or from fear of what he was about to let be shown?

After watching Hideo Kojima chock up like a virgin in strip club, the trailer for the constantly coming and going Metal Gear rising was shown.

I’m not any more interested that I was last year.

I blame Raiden for that. I just don’t find him interesting as a character. As well, the direction of the game seems to have greatly changed. Once again, I have to see more to give a good opinion but, so far, I’m not impressed.

So that was about it for the show. I can’t say that it was any better than last year’s but, some of the bits were a little funny…when they weren’t pushing the awkward envelope of course.

What did you guys think of the show, the winners and premieres though?

Let us know.

Before you ask; yes, I do come with pre-made sandwiches and cooking skills. I'm Joycelin, mostly known as Jae, and I'm about the nerdiest, quirkiest, and quietest black chick you will ever meet.
