From PC to Console: The Thoughts of a Conflicted Gamer
Right now I am in the market for a new PC. I don’t necessarily need a gaming rig that can play Battlefield 3 on full settings, just something that can handle recent PC releases. One of my incentives, besides the fact that this article is being written on a 5-year-old laptop, is that Guild Wars 2 should be launching this year.
Here is where being a conflicted gamer comes into play (No pun intended).
Guild Wars 2 has been on my radar ever since I played it at PAX a couple of years ago, and recently ArenaNet confirmed they are “in the preparation stage” of developing a console version. The news made me very happy, and then made me question if I should go ahead with a PC purchase. One of my major justifications is now out the window, but the fact remains that upgrading to a more powerful PC has its advantages besides gaming. Waiting until Guild Wars 2 arrives on my console will be ultimately cheaper in the long run but being able to multitask without frustration would be nice too.
Never underestimate what a man will do when a simple YouTube video slows down his PC to a crawl.
There was a recent miss-understanding between Blizzard and a fan about the company confirming development of a console version of Diablo 3. I’m sure Blizzard is working on a port behind the scenes as we speak, and I hope they are because the Diablo series has gameplay that will transfer very well from the desktop to your living room couch.
Even Witcher 2 will be coming to the Xbox 360 in April with an Enhanced Edition with all new bells and whistles, and a new PS3 version will probably be released sometime in the future. This is obviously the start of a trend as more PC ports to consoles are bound to arrive in our gaming futures. The Crysis franchise is available for anyone who doesn’t own a beastly gaming PC, but the only disadvantage is that the experience will not be in its entirety, aka full settings.
As long as the meat-and-potatoes of a game is represented in a port, I don’t mind the graphics being dialed down a notch or two.
Guild Wars 2, Witcher 2, and Diablo 3 share a common trait besides being fantasy games and their titles ending with a number. They all will be, or have been, ported long after their release on the PC. I think developers should decide before hand if they want to spend resources on a console version so they can release it within a reasonable time frame.
Like I said before I am willing to wait, but if GW2 comes out a year from now for consoles why bother?
A new computer will decide for me.
