Starpoint Gemini 2 Preview – Journey Into The Stars
The good people at Iceberg Interactive gave me the opportunity to preview their upcoming 3D space simulation game, Starpoint Gemini 2. Developed by Little Green Men Games, Starpoint Gemini 2 places you in the captain’s chair of your very own starship to explore the galaxy while making a name for yourself among the stars.
My adventure started on the deck of a Myrmidon starship as we docked on the massive space station called Vigo, which orbits the planet Trinity of the Trinity Free States. Our first order of business is to raise money to fund our adventure through space, and in a very short time I was earning credits by mining asteroids for resources to be sold later for quick cash. That money can go into customizing and upgrading your ship, buying supplies, and to hire officers that give your ship bonuses. My crew and I earned enough money to use a T-Gate to travel to different areas of the starmap. Using T-Gates is very expensive, but it opens up more opportunities to complete various missions for more credits and experience. A day on the job consisted of scanning space anomalies, assassinating enemy starships, and delivering cargo to space stations.
Starpoint Gemini 2 has the depth of an RPG, and there are tons of things you can go during a typical playthrough. I doubt I even scratched the surface on what this game has to offer, especially since the alpha build was recently updated that added even more features such as new ship boarding mechanics and the ability to reset Skill & Perk points. Local patrol ships can scan your ship looking for illegal goods and they will ask you to jettison the contraband If any is found. Needless to say I complied with their demands every time. I’m not trying to go to jail here, or to be blasted into space-dust.
The planets and starfields in Starpoint Gemini 2 are lush with color and detail. To add an even more immersive experience to gameplay, it was recently announced that the Occulus Rift, a new virtual reality headset, will be implemented into the game. unfortunately, I do not have access to the headset but I could only imagine how the visuals would be if i did. 3D space simulation is perfect for virtual reality, and Starpoint Gemini 2 could be a killer app for the headset.
I enjoyed my time with Starpoint Gemini 2 as a starship captain. If a blend of space combat and RPG elements is your thing, then I’m sure you will too.
Starpoint Gemini 2 is currently in Alpha on Steam’s Early Access program and is available for $22.99, and slated for full release on Steam this spring.
