Champions Online is a new super hero multi-player online RPG developed by Cryptic Studios. Released on September 1, 2009 for the PC, players are creating their own heroes (and their own nemesis) and defending Millennium City from the forces of evil. As an avid comic book collector myself, I’m glad to see someone turn this classic super hero universe into a full fledged online experience. I was able to catch up with Cryptic Studios for an interview to discuss Champions Online.
Since Champions Online is based off the table top RPG first published in 1981, how heavily did you rely on the books for source material?
We were very fortunate to have such a rich world to use as the backdrop for our game. We pulled places, heroes, villains, agencies, and even some of the storylines from the close to three decades of cannon at our disposal. We did take the opportunity to update some of the costumes of the signature heroes and villains in the world, as well as create some of our own elements to put into the world. The Nemesis system is a great example of how our, and players, creations are folded in to the world of Champions.
What makes Champions Online stand out amongst other super hero games on the market?
The Nemesis system is a big standout – being able to make your own arch-enemy and then battle against him. The fact that you can then share that creation with your friends is really satisfying and lets you show off your creativity. I also think the depth of customization with your character is unprecedented. It goes so far beyond the amazing costume creator. Being able to take any powers from the 19 power sets in the game and create a custom framework, literally building your own envisioned hero, is really pretty incredible. It is a very powerful system, and allows out players to make a vast amount of heroes.
You recently released the Blood Moon storyline for Halloween. How successful is it so far and will there be more events like this in the future?
We had a huge number of players on going through the new content and grabbing up all of the rewards. We’ll definitely be doing more events, and in fact, we’re already working on some surprises for our Winter event in December!
You stated recently that Cryptic Studios is waiting for Microsoft to give the go ahead for its release. Have you received any word on the status of the 360 version?
We’re doing a lot of work on the console version of the game right now. A separate team from the PC group is focusing on the controller scheme, console-specific UI, and overall graphics performance. The Xbox 360 version will also have the benefit of launching with all the additional content we’ve created and balancing we’re doing since the PC launch.
Will you be charging a monthly subscription for the console version?
We haven’t finalized the business end of things on the Xbox 360, so I honestly have no idea.
Is there any possibility of a PS3 version of Champions Online?
ANYTHING is possible…
Before Champions Online was being developed, you guys were working on Marvel Universe Online. Can you give us more insight on this project’s cancellation?
It had nothing to do with Cryptic studios, actually. As we were merely the developer on the game, it was a licensing issue between Marvel and Microsoft that lead to development being stopped and the game being cancelled.
What lies in the future of Champions Online and Cryptic Studios?
Continued hard work from the team to make the game better and better by providing more content and addressing the issues. We spend a lot of time with our community, and are dedicated to addressing their needs and interests as best and as quickly as we can. It’s a lot to juggle, but it’s what we have to do. And of COURSE we have Star Trek Online coming up, so the future is bright!
With tons of customization options, real time combat, and an established super hero universe, Champions Online truly allows you to make a hero of your own vision. I would like to again thank Cryptic Studios for their time.
Save the world. Be a Champion!!
