PixelJunk Eden is the third installment in the PixelJunk series, from racing mini cars to building tower defenses, the PixelJunk series has always been fun and different, and it is no different this time around. The developers over at Q-games have gone out of their way once again to create a fresh new exciting game completely different from the rest. ![]()
Plot
You assume the role of a Grimp (Grip+Jump, Get it?), a little critter that can grip, swing, and jump freely throughout the levels. There isn’t exactly a “plot” for PixelJunk Eden; you first start off in your own garden/hub, where you first can only access a certain set of levels. Within these levels you need to climb your way towards “Spectra”, an odd shaped type of object that is required to beat the level. To get high enough to collect ”Spectra” you will need to open up seeds by crashing into pollen, and pollen makes a seed grow into a plant. The more plants you open up the easier it is to climb up towards Spectra. Once you do collect the required amount of Spectra you are transported back to your own garden, where the Spectra is used to add a new plant to your personal garden. What’s the point of this you ask? Well, the more plants you have in your garden the more levels you can access, and from those levels you can collect more Spectra to add more plants to your personal garden again, this process repeats itself until you have beaten the game.
Gameplay
Everything in PixelJunk Eden is physics based; this can either be very rewarding or very frustrating. You are either overcome with happiness as you progress further up the level or overcome with grief as you over shoot a landing and come hurling back down the level; in this case you can use the SIXAXIS, with one quick swipe downward the Grimp will accelerate faster than ever strait down to waste less time, and time is essential. If time runs out the mission is over and you have to start all over. There are ways of extending time however, by collecting crystals scattered throughout the level you are able to gain a few extra seconds or a few extra minutes depending on the size of the crystal. ![]()
Controlling your Grimp feels very natural, you may get frustrated at first moving him(or her?) around but once you learn how to use inertia and momentum to get from one plant to another everything starts to come together nicely. As far as grabbing plants go, it’s fairly simple, just jump towards a plant and the Grimp will automatically grab it. Unless you hold the X button, whereas he/her will spin and not grab onto anything, this is very useful if you are trying to jet towards the ground and don’t want to be bothered with any plants. Once you do grab onto a plant you have 2 options, swing from it, or jump from it; to swing you simply tap the X button once and the Grimp will go round and round till the line breaks. Or you can jump from it to go towards another plant or newly found Spectra.

Graphics/Sound
The Graphics for this game look very cartoony but beautiful at the same time; it doesn’t try to push the PS3 to its limit but rather takes the “Artsy” look. Each level has its own unique look and feel to it and the soundtrack that goes with it never disappoints. The graphics never shows a dull moment and I think people will learn to appreciate it as they progress through the game.
Final thoughts
For 10 dollars PixelJunk Eden is a steal, you get roughly 12 hours of playtime with great graphics and an awesome soundtrack. So if you’re willing to turn in your shotgun for a relaxing experience I highly suggesting downloading this one.
