Here at PAX, I got the chance to play Borderlands from Gearbox Software. If you haven’t already heard by now, Borderlands is a fusion of a FPS and a RPG. After watching this game on the sidelines and finally being able to play it, I have to say that I am very impressed with it so far.
The controls of Borderlands are average for a FPS. This is not meant as a criticism, and it’s easy to jump in and learn the controls right away. I believe that the simplicity of the controls can actually work in its favor. Borderlands also contain heavy exploration, so why spend most of your time fumbling with the controls while you explore? That would take away from your experience, so it’s best to make things simple on the controls side of things.
The graphics fit the new style Gearbox adopted for the game in the middle in its development. Borderlands is cell shaded, and I like how Borderland keeps its detail visually. I spend a good amount of time playing split screen with a PAX attendee, going on missions for a doctor named Zed. When you first meet him, he is taking a saw to a body lying on his table. Not a doctor I want to see anytime soon. After that disturbing first impression, we explored the surrounding area fighting Skags (dog like predators that eat anything) and Bandit Thugs. With the money I earned from the enemies I defeated, I went back into town and bought a shield. I honestly believe I wasn’t scratching the surface when it came to the amount of items I could potentially buy later in the game. As the day turned into night, I could tell that a lot of time went into making Borderlands a living, breathing world. Besides the art style, Borderlands has the depth of a MMORPG. This is another trait that will make Borderlands a definite day one purchase for me.
Borderlands will definitely keep you and your friends busy this fall. I wasn’t able to try out the half a million weapon combinations, but that is something you have to invest time into the game to experience anyway. With 4 player co-op, tons of items and loot, and a in depth world, Borderlands will be worth the $60 charged for games this generation. I hope you join me as I enter the Borderlands on October 23rd
