Well known manufacturer TDK has managed to pack even more space into Sony's popular Blu-Ray format. A 10-layer 320GB Blu-Ray optical mediadisc was recently announced and the internet is already a buzz with chatter on what this could mean for gamers and casual users alike. Current Blu-Ray discs average around 50GB but with the newly announced black hole of storage space being crammed into these new discs, one could only imagine the possibilities this new advancement opens up. Could we start seeing entire seasons of our favorite high def shows fitting easily onto one Blu-Ray disc? Possibly, a next gen Final Fantasy compilation? It wouldn't be too far fetched. And that would only be the beginning. According to TDK, the currently equipped lasers found in our PS3's and other "firmware upgradeable" Blu-Ray players may be a simple update away from rewriting data over and over again onto this ground breaking new media. With a single rewritable Blu-Ray disc, we might soon see entire hard drives being backed up to a tiny disc.
The only thing holding back this new media would be the current speed of the optical drives themselves. That being said, hopefully technology can keep up with engineers over there at TDK and their amazing new feat. No release dates have been discussed on when this holy grail of storage will enter consumer's hands but don't hold your breath. The 200GB Blu-Ray disc was announced back in 2006 and has yet to see the light of day.
