The Team Ico PS3 exclusive is a very highly anticipated title, and many fans were disappointed when the title wasn’t shown at E3 2010.

Details are very scarce concerning what will debut at TGS. A new trailer or live gameplay will definitely make the fans happy since a year has passed with no new information regarding The Last Guardian since its announcement at TGS 2009.

The Last Guardian is the third game from Team Ico, the creators of Ico and the Shadow of the Colossus.

Both games are considered classics, so I’m sure this will be the longest week ever for Team Ico fans.

Platform: Xbox 360, PC

Publisher (s): Electronic Arts

Developer (s): BioWare

Genres: Role-Playing, Shooter, Action

Release Date: September 7, 2010

ESRB Rating: Mature

Remember the old days when you could just slap Omni-gel on everything? Yeah, those were the good times, back when Liara wasn’t a revenge driven woman and when I didn’t know everyone’s dirty little secrets. Thankfully, the Shadow Broker made all of that possible in the newest, and best, DLC for Mass Effect 2.

Ever since ME1, you have been constantly bothered by the question, “Who the hell is the Shadow Broker?” Thankfully, Bioware didn’t screw anyone over and they actually do show us all who exactly it is. As well, it shows us all a lot more about our crew than some of us really want to know. I will leave it at that and try my best not to spoil it for anyone.

As we all know, Bioware is trying to bridge a story between the ME2 and ME3. There has been no word on if this was the beginning of that bridge but, it sure seems like it. The Lair of the Shadow Broker is a straight forward and amazing piece of content that will make everything in the world of Mass Effect a little bit clearer and a whole lot more dramatic. The DLC is extremely straight to the point when you begin. You go straight into the search for the infamous Shadow Broker only to find that getting to this person, isn’t as easy it sounds.

In an attempt to give you something without spoiling things, first, I can say you meet another Specter named Tela Vasir. Yes, for once we do hear of a Specter besides Shepard and Saren. Secondly, you DO NOT want to get on Liara’s bad side, and…she is an awful backseat driver by the way. This DLC introduces a lot of things players have not seen before. There is a car chase and actual combat without guns at one point. The rumor is true that Liara will be a squad mate but, after completing the missions, she doesn’t remain one. For all of you Liara fans, you do indeed get to rekindle your romance with the Asari but, it’s not like the romance scenes you’ve had with the other characters. You simply set some things straight and “celebrate” your reunion.

After all, though this DLC does answer a huge question for Mass Effect fans, it is more about the development of Liara T ‘Soni as a person over the two years. It’s Bioware’s way of showing you why she is different as a character and what has happened concerning your death and you coming back thanks to Cerberus.

Overall: 4 out of 5

The DLC is short and it will most likely take up about an hour or two of your day; the ending can also be a huge contradiction depending on where a player is in the game. Despite that, it is well worth the money. If you love Mass Effect, I encourage you to get it. If you merely like the game but don’t care too much beyond the entertainment, I would instruct you to pass on it and just find out what happens for yourself.

At PAX 2010, ArenaNet and NCsoft had an impressive showing of their new ambitious sequel Guild Wars 2. The booth was continually packed the whole show, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on the demo with a level one character. Besides an early chance at playing GW2, I have been looking for a Fantasy MMORPG to get into for a long time. GW2 is exactly the kind of online experience I want to have on a regular basis.

The demo started off with creating a level one character. I decided to play a Human Ranger and was lead to the quick customization screens. I was already impressed with the background choices you can make during creation. I was able to pick such things like how my character overcomes diversity, which presented 3 choices so I picked him being charming. Other choices include choosing your God/Goddesses, Your biggest regrets, and how you were raised, which also determines your starting clothing. You can be raised by common folk, nobles, or off the streets. I picked that he was raised by nobles, so my Human Ranger had a more elegant and clean look to him. With all the personal questions to help fill out his biography, I instantly felt like this character was actually coming from my head and that the choices I made mattered.

The distinct art style of Guild Wars 2 is prevalent in the opening sequences and dialog screens of the game. As I start to explore the world with my Human Ranger I was instructed that Centaurs were raiding the town, I spent the time defending the town with other players and helping innocent bystanders to safety. Combat is fairly easy to get a hold of. I was able to jump over obstacles and perform combat rolls as I fired at Centaurs with my bow. There is definitely a mix of adventure mechanics in character movement thrown in, and would work great on a console.

"You will either find trouble, or trouble will find you."

The dynamic Event System is one of the best things to be developed for an online game. You don’t receive missions from some guy sitting on a corner. Events will pop up in your window when you come across them naturally, and so will the objectives needed to complete them. There will be occasions where you might have a person run up to you asking for help just like in Red Dead Revolver or InFamous. This type of mission system also encourages other players to join in your fight because it is so spontaneous in nature. Guild Wars 2 will also reward you accordingly, so if you put in a lot of work during the battle it doesn’t matter if you landed the killing blow or not. Exploring Guild Wars 2 on your own has a single player campaign feel to it because how you come across trouble is so progressive. There is no more running in circles killing an “x” amount of sheep to receive XP and a meaningless reward. You will either find trouble, or trouble will find you.

Guild Wars 2 is truly a living, breathing world where you don’t know how the game will handle things like respawning bosses and so forth. I asked if there will be events that affect everyone playing the game and was told that nothing has been announced in that nature. I’m sure that with where GW2 is headed you just might see a massive event everyone on the map will be able to witness, and then choose to take a part in.

ArenaNet is defiantly trying to change the way you look and play MMORPGs. Every class can heal themselves, and when you are at the brink of death you can fight on. Players can revive each other if you are unlucky enough to walk through Death’s door. There will be no support characters like Clerics, so no more waiting for healers to do their jobs.

Cities will have mini games to keep your mind off the fire breathing dragon wanting to roast you once you leave it. Every player will have their own personal space as well which plays off of your personality when determining your neighbors.

Graphically this game is gorgeous, and the visuals match the art style perfectly. Think again if you have to buy a new computer to play because even older machines should be able to run GW 2.

I was very happy to be able to finally play Guild Wars 2. Everything from the art style to the game mechanics work very well. You honestly feel like every choice you make matters and that you are participating in events that shape the world around you. I highly recommend this game for RPG fans, and Guild Wars 2 is free to play so it won’t hurt to give it a try.

Guild Wars 2 is genre changing, and it’s about time.

Sony has had a pretty impressive track record against piracy this generation.

A new firmware update (3.42) has reportedly stopped the PSJailbreak, and the homebrew version called PSgroove, from working.

Firmware update 3.42 also has additional security features, which I’m sure goes into preventing similar hacks from happening in the future.

In more news about Sony’s piracy crusade, Sony recently won their lawsuit in Australia for the removal of the PSJailbreak from online retailers. The ban also applies to the sale and import of the device in Australia, and they are working on extending all this to the US.

Good job Sony!

Platform: PSP

Publishers: Acquire, Aksys Games

Developer: GOSHOW

Genre: Action, Role Playing Game

Release Date: September 14, 2010

ESRB Rating: Mature

The game is long, but I’ll try and make this review short. It has some heavy duty RPG elements. You are a gladiator who is forced to fight to earn your keep as a slave. The minor twist is as a slave fighting earns you money which affords you many things and most importantly your freedom. You start the game from customizing your character, and it is a well executed feature. You can set your name, origin, body type, skin color, head type, hairstyle, and hair color. Then you move on to the next screen where you can adjust your vitality, endurance, and strength.

Once your character is created you are thrust into a tutorial (Gladiator training school) where you learn the battle system and many styles of fighting. You move with the analog stick and pick up and equip weapons with the D-pad. The button Layout is great. Your gladiator can strike high, low, left, and right. You can make combos with these various attacks. Unfortunately there aren’t lunging attacks, but their might be because some moves are unlocked during the course of play. Also there are many more moves when you don’t have a weapon selected or lose your weapon in the course of battle.

After each battle, be sure to upgrade your character. If you forget or choose to do it later there is always the opportunity to do it before you enter the arena. You can go ahead and participate in battle, check your status, check your Items, Skills, Heal your wounds, Buy Armor, and return to the Stable. “You must participate before you leave!” There are so many little RPG elements to this game, but I’m just going to give you the meat and potatoes.

The graphics are nice. They are not spectacular, but they are solid. There isn’t a background arena presence. Most of the detail is in the characters, the weaponry, and armor. The blood splatter is refreshing, the cuts and wounds after battle is cool, but it’s not spectacular either.

They did a poor job with the sound in my opinion. The musical score isn’t bad and the clashing of weapons is nice, but there is no dialog. Subtitles are weak. Also the graphics don’t show a crowded arena other than the brief intro cut scenes, but the audio doesn’t give the feeling of such either.

The gameplay is great. I would personally give it a perfect score, but I haven’t experienced enough of the game. Some of the issues lie in its hand to hand combat, lunging attacks, and finishers. They may be in the game, but from my experience it wasn’t there. I did however experience a great slow down moment when a heavy attack dislodged my opponent’s weapons.

Pros

Controls

Weapons menu

Customization

Cons

Subtitles with no audio

No Finishers

Lack of mobility

Overall: 3.5 out of 5

If you are an action RPG fan this title will have you coming back for more. There is plenty of depth in how you build your character, heal, and equip he or she for battle. There are a few minor things that are left out of the game from what I can tell, but overall the game is solid.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 made an appearance at PAX 2010 to some very eager Star Wars fans. Unleashed 2 continues the story of Starkiller, Darth Vader’s secret apprentice on the road to redemption. As a follower of SW lore, I wanted to get my hands on this piece of Star Wars continuity, and I will have to say that the force is strong in this one.

Graphically, The Force Unleashed 2 is excellent with smooth and polished visuals. The backgrounds are very bright and full with color, and you can actually see a good amount of detail on the Stormtroopers, and Starkiller himself.

The Demo starts off with Starkiller and Darth Vader in a cloning facility on the planet Kamino. Starkiller starts having visions of what’s to come, and one of those visions is his impending doom by the hands of Vader. Starkiller makes his escape, but not without killing some Stormtroopers first. TFU2 has dismemberment, so while you are pulling off saber combos, heads and limbs will go rolling and flying. The gameplay is very much God of War inspired while keeping the same elements in the original Force Unleashed. Starkiller can still perform some nifty looking saber combos, use Telekinesis on objects to open doors, Force push, and electrify enemies with Force Lightning. Force Push and Lightning can also be added into a saber combo as before. However, Starkiller now enters combat duel wielding light sabers. I don’t think they make you more effective in combat, but you do look cool with two light saber blades dancing around your enemies.

The scale of the game has also been raised to a more cinematic level. After Starkiller escapes Vader, he busts out a wall and is free falling on the side of the cloning facility. While rain is falling everywhere, you can control his descent and use lightning on passing TIE Fighters. If debris gets in your way you can use you Push to clear a path. When Starkiller has the bottom of the facility in sight, he crashes through a glass ceiling and causes a massive force wave destroying everything in its path. This type of storytelling makes you feel like you actually have the force as an ally, and that you are doing what the title suggests; unleashing it.

Starkiller will be dodging and blocking blaster fire with deadly efficiency, and you will be able to use the famous Mind Trick to make your enemies kill themselves. The physics engine is also very fun to mess around with. When you grab an enemy with the force they wiggle in the air, and if you throw a crate at Stormies you can play Force Bowling if you are lucky.

New enemy types mix up the combat so your not always button mashing. There are Scout Troopers wielding Force Pikes who are pretty good at blocking your light saber hits. There are also massive War Droids that use shields and a Carboinite thrower as a right arm. If you are frozen by them you have to push the B button rapidly to free yourself. Disarming the heavy Droids is done by taking the shield from them with the force, and commence to beating it down with its own protection. Toward the end of the demo I was able to throw Tie Fighters into a pillar, so I can use it as a bridge. Two Scout Walkers were waiting to ambush me and ships carrying more storm troopers descended on my position. I used Force Fury, which enhances my attacks and Force powers to take care of them, and make my escape in a Tie Fighter before Vader himself steps on the scene. Of course he is too pissed for words when he watches Starkiller leave the planet.

Lucas Arts has done a great job of raising the ante with the graphics, gameplay, cinematic storytelling, and off course the Force. With Boba Fett making an appearance, Star Wars geeks like me have even more reasons to see Starkiller’s story to its very end.

I was able to get my hands on Infamous 2, one of the most anticipated PS3 exclusives at PAX Prime 2010. As a huge fan of InFAMOUS, I will have to say that Cole’s new adventure is definitely hot. I would use the word “electrifying”, but that would be quite corny of me.

The graphics of Infamous 2 has gone through a noticeable upgrade. The visuals are on par with Uncharted 2. Everything from the character models to the city streets is very detailed and crisp. The New Orleans inspired New Marais seemed more alive than Empire City, and Sucker Punch did an excellent job making the city look the part.

The demo starts you right in the middle of action, as swamp monsters are terrorizing a crowd of innocent people. Cole doesn’t waste any time, as he pulls out his new melee weapon which is simply called “The Amp“. Pulling off combos with the Amp is very easy and rewarding as each hit crackles with electricity, and dynamic camera angles are thrown in to give the fight a more cinematic look. Infamous 2 still keeps the transition from normal speed to slow motion in the action sequences, which makes combat even more dramatic. Cole can hit multiple enemies with each sweep of the Amp, and even juggle them. If you are lucky you can throw in a finishing move to end your combos.

After the beat down I was instructed to chase after the Limo of a man named Bertrand. He is the leader of a militia who holds a grudge against individuals with super powers. To chase him down you have to ride the electric lines of New Marais, which was half the fun of the first Infamous. The power lines you have to follow glow so you can point them out easier. The camera will also point to certain lines making it easier to find the right one , so you don’t miss a stride. Cole can also ride the electric cables on the side of buildings, besides the power lines in the streets.

You get these cool shirts for playing too!

Keeping up with the Limo isn’t an easy task, and while I was running through the streets I had to take out some gang members shooting at me from a balcony. Environments are destructible this time around, and man was it satisfying to cause some mayhem.

I finally was able to jump from a tall building and slow my fall on top of Bertrand’s Limo. After some trash talking between the two, Cole is knocked off of it by a helicopter and scrambles out of the way of incoming missiles. This is where you are able to run from the helicopter and use a new power; The Ionic Vortex. Cole spins and hurls a tornado crackling with electrify as it smashes anything in its path and sucks up innocent bystanders.

Unfortunately the action stops there, so be prepared for a short demo if this one is released on the PSN.

Infamous 2 is exactly what a sequel should be. It builds on an already great action/adventure game and improves on it greatly.

The wait until 2011 have just became harder to bear.
